I have been a teacher for the Copper Country Intermediate School District since 1999. All but one of those years have been in a community based program - the Community Transition Program. My adults students with Cognitive Impairments range in age from 18 - 26 years old. The students learn adult living skills and work skills in the classroom setting and in the Copper Country community area through Work Based Learning experiences.
I volunteer in the winter for the Superior Alliance for Independent Living (S.A.I.L.) recreational program by organizing adaptive cross country skiing and snowshoeing at the Michigan Tech Ski Trails.
MTU students help move the steel for the greenhouse – Copper Country Strong!
These MTU students volunteered to help us move the steel pieces for the greenhouse structure to the building site. We could not have done it without them! Thank you!

A storm was rolling in and we just finished marking the spot for the greenhouse at the ISD.

CCISD Needs Help To Reassemble Greenhouse
The Copper Country Intermediate School District has a greenhouse for their students to learn from, now they just need some help putting it back together.
For years, the CCISD used the greenhouse located on the property of Copper Country Mental Health for students in their Community Transition Program.
The structure was recently donated to the district and will be relocated to at the Copper Country Learning Center in Hancock once it’s reassembled.
Greenhouse Project manager Karyn Juntenun is working to help raise the $10,000 needed for the work.
Juntenun said, “Of the $10,000, I’ve been able to write grants with some co-workers of mine and we’ve also have had service organizations donate money and I’ve been doing presentations at service organizations to ask for more money and also interest in time and materials or volunteer hours for work bees when we do put the structure back up.”
The plan is to have the foundation poured by June and the whole structure completed by November.
When it reopens, the greenhouse will be available to all CCISD students.

Thank you to Shawn Opplinger for her help with the Lake Superior Statewide Initiative (L.S.S.I.) grant! This is a wonderful addition to our greenhouse project: monetarily and being a member of the L.S.S.I. organization for future lessons in how to use our environment as a classroom.
